If you want to be a copywriter, you need to find a way to make sure that you stand out from the thousands of other copywriters that are out there. The reality is that there are many – seriously bad – copywriters out there, but until you manage to get your foot in the door, nobody is going to notice how good you really are. So, what you need to do is find a great way to stand out from the crowd: come up with a slogan, volunteer, make friends, and facilitate mutual benefits. Now let me cover it in more great detail, so to put it.
Think of a Slogan
If you’re any good, you need a slogan. Slogans aren’t just for the big companies. Nike, for instance, has the world famous slogan “Just Do It”. Everybody knows what you are talking about when you say those three little words. But Nike didn’t start as a huge multimillion dollar worldwide leader. It started very small. But it has almost always had that slogan. It doesn’t mean that you can’t start work without a slogan of course. In fact, you can use client feedback to design your slogan as you work. For instance, I have been told many times that I write great plain English, meaning I can target the audience much better than others. My slogan quickly became: “Engaging Your Readers”. It worked.
Volunteer
Volunteer to give out free advice. There are loads of forums that are like meeting places for freelance copywriters and those who need writers. Feel free to give out free advice on there. Also, if you spot a website with some obvious mistakes, why not send them an email with some details about how they can make it better? Write them a free article for instance. Just make sure you stick a link at the bottom of your email, so they will remember you and send work your way.
Make Friends
A lot of people think that offering a copywriting service is lonely work. After all, you are likely to work from home and to sit behind your computer for days on end. In fact, this is the only thing that I struggled with when I first became a copywriter. I didn’t have colleagues to natter with and talk about the weather with, which is what I was used to from working in an office. I wouldn’t call it lonely, after all I had time to see my neighbours and friends, but I wasn’t able to chat with likeminded people. People may find it funny when you nag that you have to write 79 articles on dried dog food, but they are never going to understand how that really feels unless they do the same.
Mutual Benefits
However, you can make some fantastic friends, and these friends will be friends with benefits. I’m really close now with a few web designers and graphic designers. This has been to our mutual benefit, because I send work their way and they send work my way. It’s all about networking! You scratch my back, I scratch yours type of thing. Don’t get me wrong, I have made actual friends, it isn’t all about the benefits, but it’s great to once again be able to converse with people – in real time, albeit online – who understand what I am going through every day, even if it’s just to nag about the great British weather.
Offering copywriting services can be seriously hard to get into and really become set. But there are some really fun things you can do to get your name out there and become one of the best of the best and they involve creativity, helpfulness and friendships – the building blocks of life really.
