Got confused what happened to the Google Keyword Tool and not sure what to do once you’re redirected to the brand new Keyword Planner thing? I got you covered. Thing is, Google decided to discontinue their Keyword Tool and gives us the Keyword Planner instead. You’ll learn what’s new in the tool and how it can help you with your keyword research. R.I.P Google Keyword Tool. Long live the new Keyword Planner! You may either like the new king… I mean tool or not, but it’s something that we’ll have to live with for at least a few years (judging from the previous major update frequency). So, you mos def need to learn how to use the brand new tool.
How to Get to Keyword Planner
If you have thte former Keyword Tool bookmarked, you can use it to get to the new Keyword Planner. The funny thing is that they still have the Keyword Tool in the Tools and Analysis drop-down menu option under your Google AdWords account. So, you can select either Keyword Tool or Keyword Planner, but it’ll redirect you to the Keyword Planner page anyways. Don’t be confused and stay cool.
And a more advanced screencast for you guys.
You may want to check this manual on using Keyword Planner.

I’m still not seeing the same SEO functionality of the Keyword Tool here. Like, entering in a keyword and seeing a list of suggestions similar to your keyword phrase + monthly searches and competition level?? Am I just not seeing it? Thanks!
Thanks for your comment, Nancy. Actually, the feature is there. Just make sure that you click the “Keyword ideas” link once you’ve clicked the ‘Get Ideas” blue button. Let me know if you sill have the issue.
Aha! Yes – I see that. Great! It is interesting that the Keyword Planner results seem to be showing lower search numbers than the Keyword Tool for the same keyword phrase. I have the Planner set to “all locations” and “all languages,” so I believe I’m comparing apples to apples…. The only difference I can tell is that the Planner calls the numbers “average monthly searches” and the Tool calls the numbers “global monthly searches.” Thanks for your help and feedback! 🙂
Sure, you’re warm welcome! Thing is, Keyword Planner shows exact matches by default. Back in the day you had to explicitly specify that in Google Keyword tool whereas Keyword Planner does that automatically. I personally really like the fact that it shows exact match keywords by default because I used to adjust the same setting (exact match) every single time I used Google Keyword tool. And it was really misleading and confusing when I forgot to specify that and the keyword tool showed me broad match searches instead of exact ones. Be sure to let me know if you have any questions. 🙂
